Lanka Dairies Limited (LDL) was established in 1994 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Lanka Milk Foods (CWE) PLC (LMF) and commenced operations in 1996. The company specializes in the production and packaging of a diverse range of dairy products, including fresh milk, flavored milk, fruit juices, and other milk-based products, utilizing state-of-the-art Tetra Pak® technology to ensure quality and freshness.

A key differentiator for LDL is its comprehensive control over the supply chain. Since 2001, its strategic expansion into dairy farming has enabled a high degree of backward integration, securing more than 80% self-sufficiency in fresh milk. This integrated approach guarantees both consistency and superior quality across its product range.

LDL’s dairy operations are rooted in the pristine central highlands of Sri Lanka, where Ambewela Dairy Farms provide optimal conditions for premium Friesian and Ayrshire cattle. These high-yielding cows, nourished with scientifically formulated ryegrass sourced from Australia and New Zealand, produce an exceptional 30–33 liters of milk per day—making them the most productive herd in the country.

Our Dairy Ecosystem

To uphold the genetic integrity of its herd, Ambewela employs advanced artificial insemination techniques using top-tier sexed semen sourced from the USA and Finland—resulting in approximately 80–90% female births. Each selection undergoes stringent evaluation to ensure compatibility with Sri Lanka’s climate, ease of calving, strong immunity, and superior milk production.

LDL Group’s dairy farms adhere to the highest international standards, leveraging cutting-edge mechanized cultivation and a scientifically formulated feed program developed by global nutrition experts. A dedicated team of resident and visiting veterinarians, alongside experienced farm staff, ensures optimal animal health. This commitment results in high-yielding cows with exceptionally low bacterial counts in milk. The farms operate under precision livestock farming systems, where each animal is equipped with electronic identification. This technology enables real-time monitoring of health metrics, productivity, body condition, and activity levels, allowing for timely interventions to sustain peak health and performance.

The premium-quality milk from LDL Group’s dairy farms is transported to state-of-the-art processing facilities in Welisara and Ambewela. Utilizing the globally recognized Ultra-High Temperature (UHT) process, Ambewela Fresh Milk—Sri Lanka’s market leader in fresh milk—retains its full nutritional value for up to six months without refrigeration. LDL Group pioneered UHT processing and Tetra Pak® packaging in Sri Lanka, setting new industry benchmarks for quality and innovation.

Adhering to the highest hygiene protocols, Ambewela Fresh Milk remains untouched by human hands throughout its processing journey—from farm to table—ensuring unmatched purity and nutritional integrity. In addition to fresh milk, Ambewela farms produce a range of premium dairy products, including yoghurts, cheeses, and butter, crafted to deliver an authentic taste experience.
